Is it safe to go to Rio, Brazil now?

I have the opportunity to go to Honolulu for my birthday or Brazil. I'd prefer Brazil but I am so worried about it being safe. Has anyone visited Rio lately who can help? Linda- that is funny. I lived in Miami so I guess I shouldn't have any worries then? LOL
