How do you import a car from NYC to Rio, Brazil?
I have a 1995 volkswagon and I want to ship it to Brazil. I'm curious to find out if it is affordable, or if I should just sell it and buy something in Brazil?

- Most of the time it is just easier to sell the car and buy something when you get over there, simply because of import duties and taxes, complying with local government standards and shipping and handling fees. First up call a shipping company to see what they charge for drive on drive off (they drive the car into the hull of the ship and drive it off at the destination) as well as renting a shipping container (you can purchase half or a full container - and this might allow you to ship extra stuff with your car). Then look for the destination's directions on complying with their local emissions and safety standards otherwise the car wont get registered. Or you can call a shipping broker and they might be able to handle everything from pick up at your house to drop off at the destinations port so you can drive the car away and give you a final price on all that fun stuff.
- I think it is as hard to find gasoline in Brazil as it is to find ethanol here. They have converted to use ethanol in their vehicles down there. You might want to check on the availability of gasoline before you ship it down.
- Sell the car ! It's going to cost about $4000, if you put it inside a container. This will not include , import Duties , plus the Brazilians may not let the car into the Brazil , because each country has certain standards before they let cars into their country . Check with this Brazilan broker : Tânia Pereira ATLANTIS INTERNATIONAL - FINE ARTS DIVISION Rua Belisario Pena 919 21020-010 Penha - Rio de Janeiro - Brazil Phone: 55 21 3888 5252 Mobile: 55 21 8882 3100 Fax: 55 21 2590 0271 or 2270 6699 E-mail: fine-arts@atlantis-international.com.br Web page: www.atlantis-international.com.br I have used them to import art into Brazil and there were excellent. I have given you the name of person who is in charge of the art section, but she re-direct you the right person in her company. If you like the Volkeswagen , Brazil makes them, so it will be better and cheaper to purchase locally. Boa Sorte
